MISSION & HISTORY

The Multicultural Health Institute (MHI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1995 by Dr. Lisa Merritt, MD, with a core mission to address health inequities.

We passionately seek to level the healthcare playing field by promoting, educating, and ensuring equal healthcare access and treatment for vulnerable communities.

Using the principles of prevention, education, advocacy, research, linkage to care, and sustainability (PEARLS) our work supports programs that educate, identify, and test for conditions such as:

  • Cancer

  • Diabetes

  • Obesity

  • Stroke

  • Cardiovascular Disease

  • Infant Mortality

  • Mental Health Disorders

  • Environmentally-related Health Disorders

  • Covid, HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases

affecting vulnerable communities across the United States, thereby reducing healthcare costs for all.

Stronger together has become the heartbeat of MHI in collaboration with a growing coalition of volunteers, community-facing agencies, and community-based organizations.

COVID-19 has exposed the glaring need to address the many inequities in health, healthcare, and socioeconomics, particularly for those of African descent as well as Latinx and other minority populations in America.

Nationally, African-Americans, who make up 13 percent of the population, represented a third of COVID-19-related deaths.

Multicultural disparities in healthcare and socioeconomic outcomes continue to persist, especially within Latinx and African-American communities, and are compounded by the impact of Climate Change. Factors such as unsafe working conditions, limited ability to telework, multigenerational housing, and language barriers contribute to these disparities.

MHI fervently seeks to close this health equity gap because when the most vulnerable are healthier, it improves the health and productivity of the entire community.
